From Disconnected to Determined: Churches, Denominations, and Ministries in Belize and GTP
I juggle many responsibilities. I serve as a pastor, but I am also a husband, a father, and a high school teacher. This wide set of commitments often stretches me to the limit. Perhaps you can relate. With so much on my plate, I realize that I cannot make it through my own strength. I have learned to rely on the Holy Spirit to navigate life and on fellow believers for encouragement.
My wife and I find joy in ministering with children, youth, and other couples. Our passion is to see lives transformed and dedicated to Christ and His work. While we believe that transformation and impact happen in the context of relationships, it’s hard to impart truth and impact people with limited time and resources. But it’s easier when you get help from above through friends.
In December 2021, my friend John Roomes called me from Jamaica (he’s pictured on the left in the header photo above). While catching up, I discovered that he volunteered as the GTP Regional Facilitator for the Caribbean. We discussed a possible GTP visit to Belize in February 2022. It was heavenly timing as it was just what we needed! For Belizeans, it’s not common to see interest from international stewards to come and serve.
JOE uses a fun mix of experiential learning activities. Everyone loved them!
As I learned about GTP, I got excited that John invited me to host a Journey of Empowerment (JOE) retreat. I did not know much about JOE, but he encouraged me to invite key influencers from churches, denominations, and ministries to attend. Many looked forward to it because it met a real need for training for local workers. But that’s when the opposition came.
Satan always tries to keep us from receiving the gifts God has for us. But God’s purposes prevailed. I aimed to invite a broad range of people from different areas and interests in Belize. Many expressed willingness to come but only a few could make it. In the end, God opened the door for receptive servants who would receive the gift of the training and spread it to others.
The deep table discussions stood out as a highlight of the JOE experience.
Through the sharing of meaningful stories and meals together, something wonderful took place. We became one in Christian community. This motivated us to shift from working as a disconnected collection of churches, denominations, and ministries to collaborating to serve our nation. We got inspiration from the Bible characters Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah. This served as a reality check for me and prompted me to make a resolution.
After the training, I was determined to pursue my passion and do what God has put on my heart even if it seems futile. I vowed to revisit my vision and set new personal goals for myself, my family, and our church, which would increase the impact on our context. A week after the JOE experience with GTP, I determined to replicate it with a group of young people. This inspired others to do the same.
The first 22 Christian workers to go through JOE in Belize. GTP trained this group to facilitate it with others through a TOT (training of trainers).
From the JOE retreat, six participants, including myself, facilitated JOE groups to share this powerful tool to impact our church and community. I did it with 27 young people. Emiliano Lozano led 15 through JOE. Derrick Pitts had 12 in his group. Allen Mendez served 24. Piola Lozano had 60 participants, and Andella Moore welcomed 18. That’s a total of 156 transformed stewards so far, and I’ve just started my second JOE group.
I believe that as churches, denominations, and ministries work together to pour into the lives of those around us, change will come! God used JOE to solidify what we believe, and the experience inspired us to live out our values. We are so glad God gave us this tool to bless others. But don’t just take my word for it. Read this testimony from Rev. Andella Moore with the Methodist Church, Belize/Honduras District:
“I facilitated JOE with a group of 18 teenagers at the Lake Independence Community Church of Belize City. The participants were eager to see themselves as part of the solution to the transformation that is possible in their community. As a facilitator, I saw the impact of the program during the course of the journey. I believe that the 'self-work' and the stories and characters from Scripture challenged them to the core and inspired them. Many of them had 'eureka' moments during the discussions. As the participants are involved in other groups and clubs, they have the opportunity to share nuggets of what they learned with others and also to live out the principles where they are.”
I implore you who have also gone through JOE to share it with others. And if you have not gone through JOE, do it online, onsite, or on demand right away! The excitement you have generated will propel you to execute with anointing and power what God wants to do through you. Don’t let the journey end. Keep growing yourself by empowering others! De la Desconexión a la Determinación: Iglesias, denominicaciones, y ministerios en Belize y GTP
Hago malabares con muchas responsabilidades. Sirvo como pastor, pero también soy esposo, padre y maestro de escuela secundaria. Este amplio conjunto de compromisos a menudo me lleva al límite. Tal vez usted puede relacionarse. Con una agenda tan ocupada, me doy cuenta de que no puedo hacerlo todo con mis propias fuerzas. He aprendido a confiar en el Espíritu Santo para navegar por la vida y en mis compañeros creyentes para recibir aliento.
Mi esposa y yo nos gozamos en ministrar a niños, jóvenes y otras parejas. Nuestra pasión es ver vidas transformadas y dedicadas a Cristo y su obra. Si bien creemos que la transformación y el impacto ocurren en el contexto de las relaciones, es difícil impartir la verdad e impactar a las personas con tiempo y recursos limitados. Pero es más fácil cuando recibes ayuda de arriba a través de amigos.
En diciembre de 2021, mi amigo John Roomes me llamó desde Jamaica (el aparece a la izquierda en la foto del encabezado). Mientras conversábamos, descubrí que él se ofreció como facilitador regional de GTP para el Caribe. Discutimos una posible visita de GTP a Belice en febrero de 2022. ¡Fue un momento celestial ya que era justo lo que necesitábamos! Para los beliceños, no es común ver interés de mayordomos internacionales en venir y servir.
JOE utiliza una combinación divertida de actividades de aprendizaje experiencial. ¡A todos les encantó!
A medida que aprendí sobre GTP, me entusiasmó que John me invitara a organizar un retiro de Viaje de Empoderamiento (JOE). Yo no sabía mucho sobre JOE, pero él me animó a invitar a personas influyentes clave de iglesias, denominaciones y ministerios para que asistieran. Muchos lo esperaban porque satisfacía una necesidad real de capacitación para los obreros locales. Pero fue entonces cuando llegó la oposición.
Satanás siempre trata de impedir que recibamos los regalos que Dios tiene para nosotros. Pero los propósitos de Dios prevalecieron. Mi objetivo era invitar a una amplia gama de personas de diferentes áreas e intereses en Belice. Muchos expresaron su voluntad de venir, pero solo unos pocos pudieron asistir. Al final, Dios abrió la puerta para siervos receptivos que recibirían el regalo del entrenamiento y lo difundirían a otros.
Las discusiones profundas de las mesas se destacaron como un punto culminante de la experiencia JOE.
Al compartir historias significativas y comidas juntos, sucedió algo maravilloso. Nos hicimos uno en la comunidad cristiana. Esto nos motivó a pasar de trabajar como una colección desconectada de iglesias, denominaciones y ministerios a colaborar unos con otros para servir a nuestra nación. Nos inspiramos en los personajes bíblicos de Ester, Esdras y Nehemías. Esto me confrontó con la realidad y me impulsó a tomar una resolución.
Después del entrenamiento, decidí seguir mi pasión y hacer lo que Dios ha puesto en mi corazón, aunque pudiera parecer pequeño. Prometí revisar mi visión y establecer nuevas metas personales para mí, mi familia y nuestra iglesia, lo que aumentaría el impacto en nuestro contexto. Una semana después de la experiencia de JOE con GTP, decidí replicarla con un grupo de jóvenes. Esto inspiró a otros a hacer lo mismo.
Los primeros 22 obreros cristianos de Belice en pasar por JOE. GTP capacitó a este grupo para que ellos puedan facilitarlo con otros a través de un TOT (Entrenamiento de Entrenadores, por sus siglas en inglés).
Del retiro de JOE, seis participantes, incluyéndome a mí, facilitamos grupos de JOE para compartir esta poderosa herramienta e impactar a nuestra iglesia y comunidad. Lo hice con 27 jóvenes. Emiliano Lozano lideró 15 personas por medio de JOE. Derrick Pitts tuvo a 12 en su grupo. Allen Méndez sirvió a 24. Piola Lozano tuvo 60 participantes y Andella Moore dio la bienvenida a 18. Eso es un total de 156 delegados transformados hasta ahora, y yo acabo de comenzar mi segundo grupo JOE.
Creo que a medida que las iglesias, las denominaciones y los ministerios trabajen juntos para derramarse en las vidas de quienes nos rodean, ¡el cambio vendrá! Dios usó a JOE para solidificar lo que creemos, y la experiencia nos inspiró a vivir nuestros valores. Estamos muy contentos de que Dios nos haya dado esta herramienta para bendecir a otros. “Facilité un grupo de JOE con 18 adolescentes en la Iglesia Comunitaria Lake Independence de la ciudad de Belice. Los participantes estaban ansiosos por verse a sí mismos como parte de la solución a la transformación que es posible en su comunidad. Como facilitadora, vi el impacto del programa durante el transcurso del entrenamiento. Creo que el 'trabajo propio' y las historias y personajes de las Escrituras los desafiaron profundamente y los inspiraron. Muchos de ellos tuvieron momentos de 'eureca' durante las discusiones. Les imploro a ustedes, quienes también han pasado por JOE, que lo compartan con otros. Y si no ha pasado por JOE, ¡hágalo en línea, de forma presencial o a través de la plataforma de autoaprendizaje de inmediato! La emoción genera te impulsará a ejecutar con unción y poder lo que Dios quiere hacer a través de ti. No dejes que el viaje termine. ¡Sigue creciendo tú mismo empoderando a otros! ¡Dios bendiga a GTP y al entrenamiento de JOE!
