Duncan Szeto – Planting churches to serve the next generation of the Chinese diaspora
May 31, 2026From Broadcasting the Gospel to Building a Bridge for the Global Accountability Movement
I grew up on a dairy farm in Northern Minnesota, where faith and hard work shaped my early years. During high school, I heard God’s call to help good, religious people find a relationship with Jesus Christ. That night, I committed my life to full-time ministry.
Though passionate about radio, I wrestled with how it fit God’s plan. In prayer, I cried out, “God, I’ll do anything You want me to do. I just want Your will and peace about it. I feel willing to completely give up radio and obey You.”
Days later, God confirmed His call, showing me that Christian radio could reach the unreached and bring the good news of Jesus to those who have never heard His name. Romans 10:14 became the guiding Scripture of my ministry: “How will they hear unless someone sends a messenger?”

I began my journey at KTIS/University of Northwestern in 1967 and later served with Moody Radio. I eventually took the helm as President & CEO of HCJB Global (now Reach Beyond), where I saw the gospel reach people in diverse contexts. This deepened my conviction that media, combined with local partnerships, transform lives where traditional ministry faces limits.
I also held senior roles with the National Religious Broadcasters and, since 2018, I have represented Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC) as Global Ambassador and Executive Liaison.
Along the way, I continued to serve on boards such as ECFA and to support ministries worldwide, even after retirement. I often say, “God uses our DNA, our passion, our giftedness, and our interests. He waits for us to surrender so He can use us the way He created us to serve.”
My connection with ECFA runs long and deep. I served on the ECFA board in various roles, including Board Chair, guiding the organization’s commitment to financial integrity and ministry oversight.

In 2018, I stood as a witness when Dr. Gary G. Hoag received a commission from the ECFA board to start a new, separate entity: Global Trust Partners (GTP). I saw firsthand the vision to extend ECFA’s principles of accountability and transparency beyond the United States into a truly global movement.
From day 1, I recognized the significance of this step. It represented far more than the launch of another organization; it marked the birth of a worldwide effort to strengthen trust in Christian ministries through oversight and stewardship.
Since the inception of GTP, many of us at ECFA have lacked awareness of the reach and depth of the work God accomplished through GTP. Only in October 2025, when Michael Martin, ECFA President & CEO, asked me to represent ECFA at the GTP Global Gathering in Malaysia, did I reconnect with GTP.

The Global Gathering transformed me. Seeing the global church represented from 40 nations offered a foretaste of heaven. It opened my eyes to the depth of God’s work through GTP in financial transparency and ministry oversight. My mindset shifted.
Accountability signifies a spiritual discipline that strengthens trust and multiplies gospel impact, rather than a mere administrative task. Personally, it renewed my conviction that stewardship and integrity remain inseparable from mission effectiveness.
In December 2025, I accepted an invitation to present to the ECFA board about my experience with GTP. Then, in January 2026, I shared with ECFA staff the history of ECFA birthing GTP, a narrative unfamiliar to many staff members. This catalyst led ECFA leadership to meet with GTP leadership in February 2026.

What started at the Global Gathering now yields renewed partnerships that will strengthen accountability networks in the United States and extend outward into a global movement. I envision my role as a bridge, connecting the work ECFA does in the United States with the GTP initiatives around the world, so that together, we can encourage ministries everywhere to embrace transparency and oversight.
Already, I see ministries become more open to strengthening their oversight structures. Looking ahead, I picture GTP inspiring a global movement in which ministries across nations model financial integrity and excellence in oversight. I hope this strengthens the credibility of the church worldwide and advances the mission to reach unreached peoples.
